DARJEELING TRIP FROM KOLKATA BY TRAIN
Darjeeling truly feels like a gateway to paradise. Surrounded by rolling hills on every side, this charming hill town has a way of enchanting everyone with its breathtaking natural beauty. It is a place I long to visit year after year, such is its magic. For those who have never been to Darjeeling, it is nearly impossible to imagine the wonders it holds. Bengalis lovingly refer to it as “A Haven of Dreams,” and once you visit, you understand why.
I traveled to Darjeeling in 2021, seeking an escape from the monotony of lockdown life during the Covid-19 pandemic. That journey became a much-needed break for both the mind and soul. Along with exploring the main town, we also visited several serene offbeat destinations in the Himalayan region, including Lepchajagat, Tinchuley, and Lamahata—peaceful places located close to Darjeeling.
The trip lasted for five days and proved to be incredibly refreshing. It allowed us to unwind, reconnect with nature, and gather new energy before returning to the routine life of the city. In this blog, I will be sharing my personal experiences along with detailed insights into each place we explored during our Darjeeling trip from Kolkata by train.

CLIMATE
The climate of Darjeeling felt calm, refreshing, and extremely pleasant during my visit. Since I traveled in the month of October, I was fortunate to experience the weather at its most comfortable, without facing any extreme conditions. Autumn, especially from October to November, is considered the ideal time to visit Darjeeling. During this period, the weather remains cool, dry, and clear, offering stunning views and a comfortable atmosphere for travelers.
Visiting Darjeeling in the summer months, particularly from May to June, is generally not recommended. During this time, temperatures can rise up to around 25°C, making the climate feel unexpectedly warm and uncomfortable. On the other hand, travelers who wish to witness light snowfall should plan their trip between December and February. Winter temperatures can drop to 2°C or even lower, creating a cold yet magical experience.
It is best to avoid mountain travel during the monsoon season, from July to September. Heavy clouds, fog, and frequent rainfall often hide the majestic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, limiting visibility and outdoor exploration.
Lepchajagat, being situated approximately 250 feet higher than Darjeeling, enjoys a cool climate almost throughout the year. This makes it a great destination to visit in most seasons, except during the monsoons. We also explored Tinchuley and Lamahata, which are located at lower elevations than Darjeeling. These places experience daytime temperatures ranging between 14°C and 18°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop sharply to around 4°C to 7°C, adding a pleasant chill to the evenings.
DRIVING THROUGH THE STREETS
Darjeeling is a picturesque hill station located in the northern part of West Bengal, India. Nestled in the Lesser Himalayas, also known as the Himachal Range, town sits at an altitude of approximately 2,042 meters (6,700 feet). Perched on a long, narrow ridge of the Sikkim Himalayas, Darjeeling offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain peak in the world. Owing to its unmatched charm and beauty, Darjeeling is fondly known as the “Queen of Hills.”
The town is situated around 305 miles north of Kolkata and is well connected by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which usually passes through Siliguri. My Darjeeling trip from Kolkata by train lasted for six nights and seven days. We boarded the Howrah–NJP Shatabdi Express from Howrah Station, which departed at 2:15 PM and reached New Jalpaiguri at approximately 10:30 PM, completing the journey in about eight hours. Travelers also have the option of flying, as several daily flights operate from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
We stayed overnight at a hotel near NJP station to rest before continuing our journey. The following morning, we headed towards Darjeeling by car. Although toy trains are also available from NJP, usually departing between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, I personally recommend traveling by car. The road journey via Mirik Road takes around five hours, whereas the toy train can take nearly eight hours, which may feel long and tiring. However, for those seeking a unique experience, the toy train remains a charming alternative.
As our car moved smoothly along the winding roads, the hidden hills slowly revealed themselves, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The journey itself felt like a natural therapy, instantly calming my mind and heart. After two long years, I was finally visiting the most awaited destination of my home state. Several roadside eateries offer great spots for lunch, and enjoying a steaming bowl of Maggi noodles or dumplings amidst the hills feels nothing short of magical.
Entering Darjeeling town brought a wave of excitement unlike anything else. It was a refreshing escape from the chaos of city life—no blaring horns, no crowded streets, and no daily struggles. Instead, the surroundings felt peaceful and soothing. The calm and serene atmosphere instantly made me feel at home. We spent two memorable nights in Darjeeling, soaking in its charm and tranquility.

UNWRAPPING THE WONDERS
Best Places for Sightseeing in and around Darjeeling:-
1) Mirik Lake (Sumendu Lake)
Mirik Lake, also known as Sumendu Lake, is located on the route from NJP to Darjeeling. A scenic walking trail of about 3–5 km surrounds the lake, offering peaceful strolls with occasional views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The area also provides facilities for horse riding and boating. However, during my visit, boating services were temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
2) Gopaldhara Tea Estate & Simana View Point
While traveling towards Darjeeling, our driver took us to Gopaldhara Tea Estate. This spot offers breathtaking views of vast tea gardens and serves as a perfect backdrop for photography. From there, we proceeded to Simana View Point, a well-known Indo-Nepal border location. The place is completely safe for tourists and offers a unique cross-border experience.
3) Darjeeling Mall & Glenary’s
Mirik, Gopaldhara, and Simana View Point can easily be covered en route to Darjeeling. After reaching the town, a visit to the famous Darjeeling Mall is a must. The market is ideal for shopping for woollen clothes and accessories, all available at reasonable prices. For food lovers, Glenary’s Bakery, Restaurant & Pub is an iconic stop. Their chicken patties, pork sausages, rum balls, cream rolls, and freshly baked pastries are absolute must-tries.
4) Tiger Hill
To witness the iconic sunrise at Tiger Hill, we left our hotel around 4:00 AM. As the first rays of sunlight fall on Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Everest, the peaks glow in a stunning golden hue. Since Tiger Hill is one of the most popular attractions in Darjeeling, it gets crowded very quickly. Despite leaving early, we faced traffic congestion on the way. It is highly advisable to plan ahead and reach as early as possible to secure a good viewing spot.
5) Batasia Loop, Peace Pagoda, Rock Garden & Tenzing Norgay Rock Climbing
On our return from Tiger Hill, we stopped at Batasia Loop, home to the Darjeeling War Memorial. This location offers panoramic Himalayan views and an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. Travelers opting for the toy train from NJP can also witness Batasia Loop along the route.
Next, we visited the Peace Pagoda, a beautiful Buddhist stupa located on the slopes of Jalapahar Hill. The calm and spiritual vibe of this place was truly soothing. Two other must-visit attractions in Darjeeling are Rock Garden and Tenzing Norgay Rock Climbing. Adventure enthusiasts will particularly enjoy rock climbing, while Rock Garden stood out as my personal favorite. The lush greenery, diverse flora, and cascading waterfall made it feel like a natural open-air museum. The milky-white waterfall flowing from a height, accompanied by its continuous sound, felt like nature’s own therapy session.
Since Lepchajagat and Tinchuley are located in the offbeat regions of the Himalayas, there are limited sightseeing options. The real charm lies in slowing down—relaxing on your homestay balcony, soaking in the mountain views, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. I spent most of my evenings reading a novel and listening to soft music.
Reaching the viewpoint involved a short trek through a dense pine forest—my very first trekking experience. The sounds of insects and rustling leaves made me feel deeply connected to nature. It was a moment of pure calm and wonder. Staying in a homestay with a balcony view of the Jaldhaka River is highly recommended. We were fortunate enough to stay in one such place. Sitting for hours, watching the river flow gently alongside the hills, was incredibly relaxing. Nature walks around the homestay are safe and enjoyable, whether alone or in a group. We spent one peaceful night each in Lepchajagat and Tinchuley, making memories that will stay with me forever.
ROLLING THROUGH THE STREETS OF LAMAHATA
On the final day of our journey, we visited Lamahata, a peaceful destination located on our return route to NJP. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas within the Darjeeling district, Lamahata is a quiet village set on gentle mountain slopes and surrounded by dense pine forests. The calm and untouched beauty of this place instantly sets a soothing tone.
Our main stop in Lamahata was the Lamahata Eco Park, the most popular attraction in the area. This beautifully maintained roadside garden is known for its vibrant variety of flowering plants and tall pine trees. The park offers an eco-friendly environment, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and those seeking peace away from crowded tourist destinations.
The Eco Park also has a trekking trail that leads to a sacred lake. The uphill walk is approximately 750 meters from the park and took us around 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The lake is believed to be sacred by the locals and has a unique kidney-like shape with a striking green hue. Spending time here felt deeply calming, as if nature itself was offering a space for quiet reflection. The cool mountain breeze further enhanced the charm of the surroundings, making it a perfect place to spend quality time with oneself.
Another breathtaking location we visited was the Lover’s View Point, which offers a clear and stunning view of the confluence of the Teesta and Rangeet rivers. We even went down to the meeting point of the rivers, where the sandy riverbank creates an excellent spot for camping. Adventure seekers can also enjoy river rafting here. Simple moments like throwing pebbles into the flowing water brought immense joy, and I truly cherished the time spent here with my family.
This spot is also ideal for couples looking to share peaceful moments together. Watching the two rivers merge felt symbolic, almost like two long-lost friends reuniting after years apart. With this memorable visit, our Darjeeling trip from Kolkata came to a beautiful conclusion. It was a journey filled with nature, calmness, and precious family moments that I will always hold close to my heart.
